The Treasurer, Michael Aird, today said both the Tasmanian Government and developer Citta Property Group remain fully committed to the parliament square project.
Mr Aird said he was very disappointed by the Resource Management and Planning Appeal Tribunal’s decision.
“I was only formally notified of the decision this morning, and I will be seeking advice on the impact of the Tribunal’s decision on the parliament square project.
“This will include legal advice from the Solicitor-General.
“It’s important to note that the revised plan was issued to address conditions placed on the planning permit by the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority and the Heritage Council.
“I understand these minor amendments were supported by both the Heritage Council and the Waterfront Authority and did not include additional floors on the building.
“As a result of the changes, the overall bulk and form of the new office building – as viewed from in front of Parliament House – was actually less than the original design.”
Mr Aird said the parliament square redevelopment remained a priority for the Government.
“I believe the project still enjoys strong community support.
“We have consulted Citta, and it remains committed to pursuing this high-quality development proposal.
“The Government has followed world’s best practice in developing this proposal, with extensive consultation throughout from both the Government and Citta.
“I understand Citta is continuing its work towards achieving an appropriate planning permit.
“Contrary to some reports, the project will go ahead, and deliver the revitalisation of this important city site.”
