Renewable energy plans for home of Sustainable Living Expo

The revitalised Princes Wharf Shed No 1 will become a model for environmentally friendly design, the Minister Assisting the Premier on Climate Change, Lisa Singh said today at the launch of the Sustainable Living Expo.

“The refurbished shed will include passive solar design, an improved glazing system and thermal insulation," Ms Singh said.

“More significantly it will harvest rain water and sunlight from the site.

“Rainwater will be used in toilets and for wash down.

“It will use a natural gas boosted solar hot water system and roof-mounted solar panels for power generation.”

Ms Singh said that the photovoltaic array on the roof will be targeted to offset public and base lighting and significantly reduce the Shed’s need to draw on grid power.

“Work on the Shed, including significant work on the roof in removing the asbestos and making the space much safer, will start in the first quarter of next year.

“By the second quarter of 2010, these renewable energy initiatives and the installation of the solar panels will be ready to start.

“I believe that making all our assets and our lifestyles more sustainable is not just the result of the transition to a low-emissions future; it is common sense and healthy living.

“With this redevelopment we are showing what can be achieved to make our buildings more environmentally friendly.”
